PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL ON JOBS AND COMPETIVENESS

To jump start job creation across the nation, the president’s Council on Jobs and Competiveness is recommending five policy initiatives. They are the following:

     1) Accelerated investment in infrastructure and energy projects.

     2) Program to support entrepreneurship and help young, fast growing firms.

     3) A national initiative to boost foreign investment in the U.S.

     4) Simplified regulatory reviews and streamlined project approvals.

     5) Training and skills development programs created with the private sector.

THE STRABUCKS JOBS INITIATIVE

Starbucks, the global coffee chain retailer, is helping launch a nationwide fund designed to stimulate U.S. job creation.

The fund, called the “Create Jobs for USA” is in partnership with the Opportunity Finance Network, a group of private financial institutions that provide affordable loans to low-income people. The fund will begin with a $5 million donation from the Starbucks

Foundation.

Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz, called small business an “engine for job growth that has stalled” and that to get it moving “small entrepreneurs must have access to credit so they can hire again.”

Schultz said that a $5.00 donation to “Create Jobs for USA” will generate #35 in financing for local businesses. Starbucks will begin receiving donations November 1, 2011. The donations can be made online or at any of the 6,800 U.S. Starbucks locations.

LIGHTING SPECIALIST ADVANCES ENERGY-SAVING CAREER

Reprinted with permission from St.Louis at Work, a 24-Hour Snapshot, published by the St. Louis Regional Chamber & Growth Association

When Adrienne Green was laid off from her job at an electrical supplier and couldn't land a new job in the recession, she began a journey that would offer unforeseen opportunities.

Green, 36, of St. Louis had started to learn more about energy-efficient lighting before she was laid off in March 2009 from recession-battered Crescent Electric Supply.  She had attended a lighting training course at General Electric in Ohio, and she enjoyed the course.  But when her job evaporated, Green didn't give the idea of energy efficiency much more thought because she was too busy job hunting and trying to provide for her five children.

BEST JOBS QUOTES OF THE MONTH

“I wish we had treated jobs the way we treated this debt ceiling, which was a bit of a manufactured crisis, which jobs isn’t. So what if we got everyone together and said let’s set a deadline to figure out how you actually create jobs in this country. Can you imagine if the passion and energy that went into this ridiculous debt ceiling had gone into how we actually get jobs created?”

CNN business correspondent Ali Velshi on The Daily Show.

“The key to reducing unemployment is a large increase in total spending. Investors will remain on the sidelines as long as businesses continue to have enough capacity to produce more than consumers want to buy. Household spending will remain depressed as long as consumers remain fearful of losing their jobs and continue to struggle with record debt levels. And state and local governments won’t resume spending while tax revenue shortfalls continue. The only other actor capable of addressing the spending shortfall is the federal government.
